I was recently speaking with someone about their desire to potentially be an entrepreneur. As the conversation continued, they said outloud that they were not good with technology, consulting or "selling." They then went on to explain how being happy at work was important and that they truly fear artificial intelligence (AI). They believe AI is highly likely to replace anything they could start as an entrepreneur.
As I hear these keywords spoken, my brain instantly starts to line up my responses. I am ready to speak my opinion to help them consider avoiding entreprenuership and be more measured in their "AI ends all of our jobs" thinking.
But just before their statements finish, this person mentions that they can fix anything. In a short conversation, you can recognize that they are smart, experienced, detail-oriented and may have "the fixer" superpower that would differentiate them in their career. In an authentic way, they tell me they want to solve real problems, not be in meetings all day and want to interact with people while not having to "sell" to them.
My brain quickly shifted from my usual responses and reminded me of recent articles on a topic that might be helpful. I directed them to this article to explore the benefits that were important to them as they plan the next stage of their career.
If you have a common viewpoint with this person, want high satisfaction in your career and want a 65% chance of being safe from AI replacement, it might be worth avoiding entrepreneurship and considering a business career in the skilled trades.
